Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking nearly $3.3 billion worth of projects under construction in Minnesota. Thanks to a large light rail project, the Industrial Manufacturing Industry leads the state in regard to the value of these projects, followed in a distant second place by the Power Industry.

Accounting for a substantial portion of Minnesota's project spending is Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority's (Minneapolis, Minnesota) Green Line extension, also known as the Southwest Light Rail Project, which will add 14.5 miles of track to the Minneapolis/St. Paul light rail system. When completed, the line will connect downtown Minneapolis with downtown St. Paul, with 15 new stations on the route. An additional station will be constructed at a later date. The project kicked off in early 2019, with C.S. McCrossan Incorporated (Maple Grove, Minnesota) acting as the general contractor. The project requires 29 new bridges and the modification of seven existing bridges, two tunnels and more than 100 retaining walls. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2026 or early 2027. The light rail project dwarfs other Industrial Manufacturing projects. Among these is Seagate Technology Holdings' (NASDAQ:STX) (Cupertino, California) Phase I expansion of its computer hard drives manufacturing plant in Bloomington, in the southern portion of Greater Minneapolis. The project includes an 81,000-square-foot building addition with supporting equipment that will help meet increasing consumer demand. The project kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed next summer. Subscribers can click here for the full report.
Renewable energy has become the most prevalent form of power project activity in the U.S., and Minnesota is not without its own wind and solar power projects. Xcel Energy Incorporated (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis) is performing a repower of its Grand Meadow Windfarm near Dexter by installing 67 1.6-megawatt (MW) turbines to achieve nameplate generating capacity of 107 MW. The project recently broke ground and is expected to last until the end of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for more information.
A couple of smaller solar projects also are in the works. Otter Tail Corporation (NASDAQ:OTTR) (Fergus Falls, Minnesota) is establishing its Hoot Lake solar farm in Fergus Falls, near an existing coal-fired plant, allowing it to take advantage of existing infrastructure. The facility will use 170,000 solar panels to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of 50 MW. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
Refiner Flint Hills Resources LLC (Wichita, Kansas) also is getting in on the renewables action with the construction of a 45-MW solar plant at its 320,000-barrel-per-day Pine Bend Refinery in Rosemount. Approximately 100,000 solar panels will supply about 30% of the refinery's power needs. The project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of next year. Rounding out the state's top three industries in terms of value is the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry. Among these projects is a building addition at the Mayo Clinic's (Rochester, Minnesota) campus in Rochester. HDR Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska) is providing architectural duties on the construction of an 11-story, 176,000-square-foot energy-efficient building to aid in the Mayo Clinic's research and development of emerging medical and scientific technologies. Construction is expected to wrap up toward the end of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharma-Biotech Project Database can click here for the full report.
Other projects of note under construction in Minnesota include United States Steel Corporation's (NYSE:X) (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) direct reduced-grade iron pellet production line in Keewatin. The pellets will be used as feed in the production of direct reduced iron or hot briquetted iron from electric arc furnaces. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2023.
