Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $3.4 billion worth of active projects in the U.S. and Canada involving engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm PCL Construction (Edmonton, Alberta). Chemical Processing and Terminals lead the company's activity in terms of overall project value.

As ethane crackers come online in the U.S. to take advantage of abundant natural gas feedstock, ethylene exports are growing, and PCL is in on the action. PCL is providing construction services for Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE:EPD) (Houston, Texas) and Navigator Holdings Limited's (London, England) joint venture ethylene and natural gas liquids (NGL) export project in La Porte, Texas. The project entails modifying an existing terminal by demolishing existing crude oil tanks and other existing infrastructure to providing an export terminal with a loading rate of 2.2 million pounds per hour and refrigerated storage capacity of 30,000 tons. Construction on the $750 million project began last summer and is expected to wrap up soon. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

PCL also is at work on some chemical processing projects in Texas and Louisiana. In Saint James, Louisiana, PCL will soon begin EPC work on Syngas Energy Holdings LLC's (Channelview, Texas) grassroot methanol production plant. The facility is being constructed near NuStar Energy LP's (NYSE:NS) (San Antonio, Texas) crude oil and refined products terminal and will have an initial production capacity of 500,000 metric tons per year. Construction of the plant, which is expected to wrap up in 2022, is the first phase of a two-phase project, which could lead to a potential 700,000 metric tons per year of methanol capacity, although Industrial Info gives the second phase a low probability (0%-69%) of being constructed, unlike the high-probability first phase. Phase I has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $400 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I and Phase II.

Among PCL's largest chemicals projects is the construction of the low-density polyethylene (LDPE) unit at Sasol Limited's (NYSE:SSL) (Johannesburg, South Africa) multibillion-dollar Lake Charles Chemical Project (LCCP) in Louisiana. While certain units of the LCCP have been completed, the LDPE unit is scheduled to go online later this year. For more information on the LDPE unit and the overall LCCP, see Industrial Info's project report and May 23, 2019, article - Sasol Pushes Ahead with More Costly Louisiana Chemical Complex.

In Texas, PCL is at work on an air separation unit to support Formosa Plastics Corporation USA's (Point Comfort, Texas) $1 billion ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol (EG-2) unit addition on the Gulf Coast between Houston and Corpus Christi. The air separation unit will produce 1,200 tons per day of oxygen and nitrogen to support the 1 billion- to-1.2 billion-pound-per-year EG-2 unit. Construction on the air separation unit is expected to be completed early next year, and completion of EG-2 will follow later in 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the air separation unit and EG-2 unit.

In Florida, PCL is providing general contractor services on a port renovation at Cape Canaveral. The project involves renovating two existing terminals to increase port capacity as well as performing landside improvements by constructing a new luggage building and 8,165-square-foot loading dock. The projects have a combined TIV of $86.4 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the terminal renovations and landside improvements.

PCL also is involved in some large projects in its home country of Canada, including two Pharmaceutical-Biotech projects in Alberta with a combined TIV of $660 million. In Calgary, PCL is performing design-build services on a grassroot cancer center research and development (R&D) lab. The building will have 13 stories, including five underground floors, and 12 radiation vaults. Approximately one-third of the 1.37 million-square-foot building will be equipped for R&D. Construction began in 2017 and is expected to wrap up in the summer of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Lethbridge, Alberta, PCL is at work on a science building and energy center addition at the University of Lethbridge. The approximately 377,000-square-foot science building will be LEED-Gold certified and will provide space for the study of biology, chemistry and related life sciences. The utility/energy building will provide power and utilities to various campus buildings. The $200 million project kicked off in mid-2016 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
