Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Mitsui & Company Limited (Tokyo, Japan), via subsidiary Mitsui & Company (Australia) Limited (Melbourne, Australia), selected REpower Australia Pty Limited (Melbourne) as the preferred engineering, procurement and construction contractor to supply wind turbines for and construct the $200 million Bald Hills Windfarm project.

REpower Australia will perform the major scope of work at the windfarm and will select the supply and speciality contractor as needed in the third half of 2013.

The project site will be in Walkerville, Victoria, and have up to 52 REpower MM82 turbines generating 104 megawatts (MW) of electricity.

The windfarm construction will include a 27-kilometre, 66-kilovolt power line to connect the windfarm to the existing electricity grid at Victoria. Most of the transmission line work will be done by the owner company.

Civil works, including the laying of foundations, site establishments and access tracks, began in August 2012. Wind turbines are expected to be delivered on site by September or October 2013. Tower installations and turbine erections will take place between the end of 2013 and third-quarter 2014. Final testings will be in the last quarter of 2014, and the windfarm is expected to be fully operational by early 2015. Electricity generated from this windfarm will power approximately 62,000 homes.

International Power Australia Limited's (Victoria, Australia) proposed 108-MW Willogoleche Hill Windfarm near Hallett in South Australia is still waiting for grid connection permits and funding approvals from the government. The project was proposed in early 2007, but experienced significant delays.

Subject to the approvals, International Power plc (London, England) expects to commence windfarm construction in the second quarter of 2014.

International Power was acquired by GDF Suez S.A. (Paris, France) in June 2012 and was rebranded as GDF Suez Energy International in March 2013. The company is now legalized under its re-registered entity name, International Power Limited.
