Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Rio Bravo Jasmin Power Plant is a single-unit, coal-fired cogeneration plant in Bakersfield, California, that runs on bituminous coal as a primary fuel and petroleum coke as a secondary fuel. The plant owner, Rio Bravo Jasmin (Bakersfield), had planned to convert the coal unit into biomass, utilizing wood chips, barks, forest thinnings or sawdust. That plan is now on hold indefinitely.
The 38-megawatt (MW) plant includes an Alstom steam turbine, and a Brush generator with an Alstom CE boiler. The unit is equipped with a selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) system for NOx control and a baghouse to deal with particulate matter. It became operational in 1989.
Rio Bravo Jasmin is a joint venture between IHI Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) and North American Power Group Limited (NAPG) (Greenwood Village, Colorado).
There is not yet any design for the conversion. Commercial issues include costs, pricing and fuel supply.
Wolf Material Handling Systems (Elk River, Minnesota) will handle fuel for the project. It is not yet known when the project will become active again.
