Technip Expands Presence in Qatar with $60 Million Refinery Contract
Technologically advanced conversion units for upgrading bottom-of-the-barrel products will be incorporated in the refinery, which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2011.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- A $60 million lump sum front end engineering design (FEED) contract for the Al Shaheen refinery to be built in Messaieed, Qatar has been awarded to Technip (NYSE:TKP) (Paris, France). The contracts scope covers a grassroots refinery with a nominal capacity of 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil, producing high quality products such as gasoline, diesel oil and let fuel. Also included is a crude oil pipeline from the Al Shaheen field to Messaieed (90 -110 kilometers offshore) and other import/export facilities. The contract will be executed by Technips operations and engineering centers in Paris and Abu Dhabi.
Technip has extensive experience in Qatar having performed a FEED contract for Qatar Petroleum for the Ras Laffan condensate refinery and in ongoing projects such as Qatargas 11, Qatar 3 and 4, Rasgas and AKG-2.
Qatar currently has one 200,000 bpd refinery at Umm Said operated by National Oil Distribution Co. Pressure from increased crude production is motivating downstream refinery and added value projects. Crude production capacity is targeted to increase to 1.1 million bpd by the end of 2008 and current production development at Al Shaheen will raise that fields production from 240,000 bpd to 525,000 bpd.
