Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--UOP LLC (Des Plaines, Illinois) won its third refinery contract from Iraq's State Company for Oil Projects (SCOP) to provide key technology for a new transport fuel refinery.
In 2010, UOP was awarded contracts by Iraq's South and North Refineries companies for the 150,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) refineries at Maissan and Kirkuk. The new $5 billion Nassiriya refinery will process 300,000 BBL/d of crude oil into gasoline and diesel fuel. UOP will provide reforming, isomerization, fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) and selective hydrotreating. In the overall technology package, UOP will provide basic engineering, technology licenses, catalysts and specialty equipment for the refinery. Design work will begin before mid-2011.
The specific technologies to be provided to SCOP include the UOP CCR Platforming and Penex processes. These are used to produce high-octane gasoline, as well as FCC and select fining technologies that will enable high-yield production of ultra-low sulfur diesel and gasoline.
Iraq's refining capacity is expected to reach 1.6 million BBL/d by 2017, which is more than twice the current production capacity. This capacity is expected to double again by 2030. The capacity increases are driven by increasing transportation fuel demand in Iraq.
"The high yields delivered by our technologies, combined with our methodology for process unit integration and optimization, will enable SCOP to produce maximum yields of high-quality gasoline and diesel product, while also maximizing the economic value of the project," said Rajeev Gautam, the president and chief executive officer of UOP.
UOP is a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Incorporated (NYSE:HON) (Morristown, New Jersey). It is part of Honeywell's strategic business group.
