A commuter rail project helps bring Massachusetts into the top position for project value. By the end of this year, Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (Boston, Massachusetts) plans to begin construction on a Phase IV extension of its Green Line. The project entails constructing 3.2 miles of rail line with four new stations as well as the widening and reconstruction of five bridges. The $449 million project is part of a larger $2.3 billion Green Line extension project. Phase IV is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. GLX Constructors (Littleton, Massachusetts), which is a joint venture that includes Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) and others, is providing design-build services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
As e-commerce grows, not only the sellers, but also the carriers must expand their operations. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United Parcel Service Incorporated (NYSE:UPS) (UPS) (Sandy Springs, Georgia) plans to begin site preparation for a distribution hub at the former site of a metal fabrication company. The 1.6 million-square-foot hub will help optimize UPS' ground network across the northeast. Blue Rock Construction Incorporated (Allentown, Pennsylvania) is the general contractor on the project, which is expected to be completed in early 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Home Depot Incorporated (NYSE:HD) (Atlanta, Georgia) also is getting on the region's distribution and warehousing project activity with the planned construction of a warehouse campus at the site of former steel mill in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. After extensive remediation, construction will begin on a 900,000-square-foot building and a 300,000-square-foot building to accommodate the company's growing business demands in the region. Duke Realty (Indianapolis, Indiana) is the real estate developer on the project, which has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $100 million and is expected to be completed in late 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Several planned projects in the region involve the production of semiconductors, batteries and other electronic equipment. In Andover, Massachusetts, Vicor Corporation (NASDAQ:VICR) (Andover) will expand its existing 230,000-square-foot electronic components manufacturing plant by constructing a two-story, 87,000-square-foot building to expand the production of modular power components. Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects is the architect on the project, which is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Also in Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Boston) is gearing up for a couple of projects in Boston Harbor. The largest of these is a dredging expansion that will widen the deepwater port from 40 to 51 feet and deepen the reserved channel to 47 feet to accommodate larger vessels and increase the port's operational capacity. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing engineering on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $310 million and is expected to be completed in 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
A couple of microgrid projects feature in the regions. The city of Milford, Connecticut, plans to begin construction of 500-kilowatt (kW) microgrid system consisting of two 146-kW natural gas-fired reciprocating engine systems, a 120-kW rooftop solar photovoltaic system and a 100-kW battery energy storage system. Schneider Electric Company (Rocky Hill, Connecticut) is providing design-build services. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
