Bolivia: Laguna Colorada Geothermal Power Plant to Begin Construction in 2013

Researched by Industrial Info Latin America (Córdoba, Argentina)--Empresa Nacional de Electricidad (ENDE) (Cochabamba, Bolivia) will begin the construction of Laguna Colorada geothermal power plant in 2013. The facility, located near the city of Potosi, will be equipped with four 25-megawatt (MW) condensation steam turbines for a total installed capacity of 100 MW.

Four existing wells will be used, and another 10 will be drilled with six re-injection wells. The steam and brine will be separated on the platform of the wells, and the steam will be transported separately to the power plant. The brine will be transported to the re-injectors in the southeastern part of the geothermal field.

The drilling will take place from existing platforms, plus a new platform to be built in the northwest part of the geothermal field. The drilling depth is estimated to be between 1,500 to 2,000 meters, while production tests suggest a rating of approximately 56 tons per hour.

The total estimated investment for the project is $261 million, and the beginning of commercial operations is scheduled for the second quarter of 2015. The Japanese government, which has significant experience in geothermal power generation, guaranteed funding of at least $30 million to begin construction of the project.
