Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--The U.K. government has granted planning consent for the 1.8 gigawatt (GW) Hornsea Project Two offshore windfarm project off the Yorkshire coast.

Hornsea Project Two, being developed by DONG Energy A/S (Fredericia, Denmark), will cost around £6 billion ($7.8 billion) to construct and be capable of generating enough power for 1.6 million homes. The consent from the Planning Inspectorate covers the entire project including the turbines, foundations, offshore and onshore substations, array cables and export cables.

U.K. Business and Energy Secretary Greg Clark, said: "The U.K.'s offshore wind industry has grown at an extraordinary rate over the last few years, and is a fundamental part of our plans to build a clean, affordable, secure energy system. Britain is a global leader in offshore wind, and we're determined to be one of the leading destinations for investment in renewable energy, which means jobs and economic growth right across the country."

Brent Cheshire, DONG Energy's U.K. country chairman, commented: "Development consent for Hornsea Project Two is very welcome. We have already invested £6 billion in the U.K., and Hornsea Project Two provides us with another exciting development opportunity in offshore wind. Hornsea Project Two is a huge potential infrastructure project which could provide enough green energy to power 1.6 million U.K. homes. A project of this size will help in our efforts to continue reducing the cost of electricity from offshore wind and shows our commitment to investing in the U.K."

Located 89 kilometres (km) off the Yorkshire coast, Hornsea Project 2 is larger than its sister project, Hornsea Project One, which will have a generating capacity of 1.2 GW and is located around 120km from the Yorkshire coast in the North Sea. Industrial Info reported that DONG had made a final investment decision regarding the project in February. On completion in 2020, Hornsea Project One will be the world's largest offshore windfarm, a title currently held by another U.K. project, the 630-MW London Array windfarm located in Thames Estuary in England. Industry body RenewableUK welcomed the government's decision on Hornsea Project Two, pointing out that wind currently delivers over 12% of the U.K.'s electricity. This is expected to increase to 20% by 2020, with offshore wind alone providing 10%.

RenewableUK's chief executive Hugh McNeal, said: "Today's announcement is the latest vote of confidence in the U.K.'s world-beating offshore wind market. This huge infrastructure project will provide much-needed investment and energy security for our country. Offshore wind represents a massive economic opportunity to the U.K. and our coastal regions. It is creating new jobs and regenerating local communities."
