Abu Dhabi Gas Development Company to Develop the Shah Sulfur Recovery Unit

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The United Arab Emirates (UAE), the world's third-largest oil and gas exporter, is preparing to begin development of the Shah Gas Field, which is approximately 220 kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi. The Shah Gas Field is part of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries' (OPEC) massive petroleum reserves, which are ranked fifth in the world. Currently, the Shah Gas Development Project is scheduled for full completion in 2015, and will see about US10$ billion in investments.

Soon, Abu Dhabi Gas Development Company (ADGD), a venture created by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) (Abu Dhabi, UAE), will begin building a grassroot sulfur-recovery facility on the grounds of the Shah Gas Field, which contains mainly sour and high-sulfur crude. Originally, ADGD was a venture between ADNOC, which held a 51% stake in the venture, and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas), which held a 49% stake in the venture, but ConocoPhillips has since backed out.

ADGB is planning to begin construction this quarter, and has completed front-end engineering with Veco Corporation's Abu Dhabi offices, which also will be responsible for detailed design. Veco Corporation (Anchorage, Alaska) has served as a branch of CH2M Hill (Meridian, Colorado) since it was acquired in 2007. The US$1.2 billion Shah Natural Gas Processing Plant and Sulfur Recovery Facilities will concentrate on sulfur forming and granulation utilizing sulfur recovery units provided by Siirtec Nigi (Milan, Italy). All recovered sulfur will then be sent to handling facilities in Habshan and Ruwais via a new rail line. When completed in the third quarter of 2014, the sulfur recovery facilities will export between 10,000 and 11,000 tons to Habshan and Ruwais per day.
