Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Abu Dhabi Polymers Company Limited (ADPCL) (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates [UAE]) is building Borouge III, the company's third chemical production complex in Abu Dhabi. The investment for the site ranges between $2.5 billion to $3 billion. When complete, the site will produce more than 3.3 million tons of chemicals to be sold in the region. Construction began in the second half of 2010, and completion is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2013, with commissioning and operations during the first half of 2014.
ADPCL selected Bechtel Group Incorporated (San Francisco, California) to serve as a project management consultant on the 1.5 million-metric-ton-per-year ethylene unit and the butene unit, which will provide raw material for the polyethylene units being constructed. Linde AG (Munich, Germany) was awarded the engineering and construction contract, as well as licensing the technology for the ethylene unit.
The polypropylene units, each with a production capacity of 450,000 metric tons per year, will utilize Borealis AG's (Vienna, Austria) Borstar process technology. The units have been designed and are being constructed by a consortium of Tecnimont SpA (Roma, Itlay) and Samsung Engineering Corporation (Seoul, South Korea).
The engineering and construction consortium is also handling the implementation of two polyethylene units with a combined production capacity of 1.08 million metric tons per year. The polyethylene units also will use the Borstar process technology. A 350,000-metric-ton-per-year, low-density polyethylene unit will be built by Tecnimont and Samsung as well, utilizing LyondellBasell's Lupotech T process technology. Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company (Seoul) was selected as the general contractor by the consortium to construct a cross-linked polyethylene unit with a production capacity of 80,000 metric tons per year that will operate with Tecnimont's process technology.
Borouge III will increase the chemical production in Abu Dhabi, adding on to the legacy of Borouge I and Borouge II. It will boost the chemical exports for the UAE and, in turn, increase the profits for the country. The UAE has one of the most established infrastructures in the Middle East region. With cheap labor costs, high quality utilities, and an abundance of natural resources to be used as feedstock, the UAE intends to continue to invest in chemical production to compete in the region and on a global scale.
