SUGAR LAND--August 28, 2020--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $1.45 billion worth of active steel mill projects in the U.S. Southeast market region, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with the lion's share of that investment in Alabama.

Alabama is home to $1 billion of the project spend, which is driven by ArcelorMittal USA LLC (East Chicago, Indiana), a subsidiary of ArcelorMittal S.A. (NYSE:MT) (Luxembourg, Luxembourg), and a $500 million electric-arc furnace (EAF) addition at its steel processing plant in Calvert. The furnace will be capable of producing 1.5 million metric tons of steel slabs per year. With a medium probability (70-80%) of moving forward, according to Industrial Info's database, construction is planned to begin in the fourth quarter of 2021; completion is planned for March 2023.
ArcelorMittal executives note the project capitalizes on the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which requires greater North American steel production for the automotive industry. The addition is expected to generate 500 construction jobs and 200 direct jobs once completed. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Also in Alabama, SSAB North American Division, a subsidiary of SSAB (Stockholm, Sweden), is awaiting completion in September of a steel mill expansion in Axis (Mobile), Alabama. The expansion consists of three buildings, to increase the facility's production of high-strength steel. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Florida is home to a pair of projects belonging to Commercial Metals Company (NYSE:CMC) (Irving, Texas), both of which are at its long steel minimill in Baldwin, outside Jacksonville: 2020 EAF refractory repairs, which will wrap up in November, and reheat furnace/roll mill refractory repairs that are set for kickoff and completion in March 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the EAF repairs and reheat furnace refractory repairs.
In Mississippi, Samuel Roll Form Group, a subsidiary of Samuel, Son & Company (Mississauga, Ontario), has begun construction on a $6.9 million steel cold roll forming mill expansion in Iuka. The expansion will add a 67,000-square-foot building, to improve the production of heavy roll-formed steel products. Completion is expected in January 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Georgia's two projects are attributed to Gerdau Ameristeel North America, which is a subsidiary of Gerdau S.A. (NYSE:GGB) (São Paulo, Brazil), at its steel and rolling mill in Cartersville: a rolling mill upgrade, which is set for completion in January 2021, and 2020 quarterly EAF refractory rebuilds. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the rolling mill upgrade and the 2020 EAF rebuilds.
