Alliant Energy Developing Biomass Co-Firing for 930 Megawatts of Proposed Generation

Alliant Energy (NYSE:LNT ) (Madison Wisconsin) subsidiaries Interstate Power and Light Company (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Wisconsin Power and Light (Madison, Wisconsin) are proposing to build two solid fuel power generation units equaling 930-megawatt (MW). The units are being studied with operations set to begin in the 2012-2013 timeframe. Biomass fuels help lower carbon, nitrogen, and particulate matter emissions.

Interstate Power and Light is looking at installing a 630 MW coal/biomass unit in Marshalltown Iowa. The supercritical unit will utilize coal and switchgrass and or corn stalks. According to Jeff Beer, project manager, they have tested burning up to 5% biomass at their station in Ottumwa from 2000 through May 2006. The plant is looking at starting at this threshold and possibly adding more biomass depending on heat values of the fuels.

Wisconsin Power and Light is looking to install a 300 MW coal/biomass addition at their Nelson Dewey Power Station near Cassville, Wisconsin. The new unit at Nelson Dewey will be a circulating fluidized bed boiler that will burn coal and up to 20% biomass from forests.

Alliant Energy has created a new position to help develop the biomass fuels for these projects and selected Bill Johnson as the new Biofuel Development Manager. He will be working with agriculture and forestry industries surrounding the two units.
