Babcock and Wilcox Canada To Provide New Steam Generators For More Than 3,000 Megawatts of Nuclear Power Generation in Ontario

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Babcock and Wilcox Canada Ltd (Cambridge, Ontario), a division of Babcock and Wilcox Incorporated (Barberton, Ohio), a subsidiary of McDermott International Incorporated (Houston, Texas) has signed contracts with Bruce Power for 24 steam generators. Each of the four CANDU Pressurized Water Reactors at Bruce A Nuclear Generating Station (Tiverton, Ontario) will use eight steam generators each, producing 1,300,000 pounds per hour of steam, for a total of 10.4 million pounds per hour at 600 pounds per square inch at 492F. The four CANDU Reactors each drive an 826MW Parsons steam turbine/generators.

Work on units Bruce A 01 and Bruce A 02 restart has started and some of the steam generators have already been installed in Bruce A 02, which is scheduled to return to service late in 2008. Bruce A 01 is to follow in 2009. Project Management for Bruce A 01 and 02 is being handled by AMEC NCL (Toronto, Ontario), and the steam generator installation is being handled by SNC-Lavalin Nuclear (Oakdale, Ontario).

Bruce Power has only ordered the steam generators for Bruce A 03 and at this time they say there is no decision on who will do the installation, which is scheduled for 2010 and 2011. A spokesperson for Bruce Power said there are provisions for the possible acquisition for eight more steam generators from Babcock and Wilcox Canada if the decision is made to go ahead with Bruce A 04 refurbishment.
