Brick Manufacturing Capacity Triples in Indiana with Slate of New Project Development

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Indiana has become a hotbed of activity for attracting new clay brick manufacturers. Excellent clay deposits, good infrastructure, attractive business development incentives, and close proximity to growing end-user markets in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions has enticed a trio of clay brick manufacturers to build new plants in central Indiana. Two of the projects are under construction and a third is scheduled to begin construction by the second quarter of 2007. All in all, the three companies are spending in excess of $130 million on the projects, which will produce in excess of 320 million bricks per year when complete, with plans to expand.

One of the new plants is being built adjacent to the location of Indiana’s only operating brick manufacturing plant. General Shale Production, LLC (Johnson City, Tennessee), a subsidiary of Wienerberger Group (Vienna, Austria), began construction this summer on a 100 million-brick per year plant addition next to its plant in Mooresville, Indiana. Ceric, Incorporated (Littleton, Colorado) is providing engineering and construction management for the project and mobilized on site in November 2006. Construction is scheduled to be complete by the summer of 2007. Under an ambitious construction timetable, General Shale is hoping to fire up the dual-fuel (natural gas and coal) tunnel kiln during the second week of June 2007.

Boral Industries, Incorporated USA (Roswell, Georgia) broke ground in November 2006 for a grassroot clay brick plant in Pimento, Indiana. The $55 million project is being managed by design-build contractor The Benham Companies, LLC (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). Site prep is nearing completion and foundations are due to be poured before the Christmas holiday. Erection of three buildings totaling 275,000 square feet is scheduled to begin during the third week of January 2007. Most of the necessary equipment has been purchased and delivery is scheduled from April-July 2007.

Last but not least, the most recently announced project is a plan by Canadian brick manufacturer Brampton Brick, Limited (Brampton, Ontario) to build a $45 million grassroot plant on 200 acres 20 miles south of Terre Haute, Indiana, in Farmersburg. Negotiations with contractors should be wrapped up by February 2007, allowing a spring 2007 construction kick off. The plant will initially produce 100 million bricks per year and plans are already underway for a second phase, which would increase capacity up to 200 million bricks per year.
