China Datang's 1,200-Megawatt Supercritical Coal-Fired Power Project in Hunan Approved by NDRC

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Youxian Supercritical Coal-fired Power Plant Phase I grassroot project, which is to be performed by Datang Huayin Electric Power Company Limited (SHA:600744) (Changsha, Hunan), a listed subsidiary of China Datang Corporation (Beijing), received final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on July 9, 2010. The proposed Huayin Youxian Power Plant is ready to begin construction soon, China Datang Corporation announced on July 12, 2010.

The Huayin Youxian Power Plant, also known as Huayin Zhuzhou Power Plant B, is a pithead plant in Wangling Town, Youxian County, in Hubei province. The power plant has a total planned capacity of 2,400 megawatts (MW) which will be built in two phases. Two 600-MW supercritical, coal-fired units in Phase I are to be built replace 410.06 MW of small, coal-fired units in Hunan province.

The project is also the only coal and power complex developed by China Datang Corporation in Hunan province. The required 2.9 million metric tons of coal for the Phase I project will be supplied from local mines and Shuicheng Mining Group in Guizhou province. All slag emitted from the power plant will be fully utilized. Through further optimization on design and engineering, and the selection of energy conservation equipment, various energy consumption indicators for the project will be lower than the national average in China. Upon completion, the project could save about 1 million metric tons of coal; reduce the emission of sulfur dioxide by 4,441 tons every year, and soot by 3,359 tons every year; and alleviate the power shortages in Hunan province in the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-15).

Since the project preparation began in September 2003, Datang Huayin and China Datang Corporation have made great efforts toward the project. So far, the project preparation office is sparing no effort in performing preparations. Construction of the project will begin later this year.
