China Invests in Aluminum Complex in Egypt

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ismailia is one of 26 governorates in Egypt and is located in the northeastern portion of country, along the west bank of the Suez Canal. The governorate occupies approximately 4482.8 square kilometers, or 0.46% of Egypt's area, and is home to special industrial export zones with easy access to the Suez Canal, linking the Red Sea and Mediterranean sea routes.

In May 2010, Abdul Jalil Al-Fakhrani, the governor of Ismailia, confirmed the depth of relations between Egypt and China, praising Chinese investment in Egypt, which reached $5.86 billion in 2009. In an interview with the Xinhua news agency, Al-Fakhrani said that there are serious moves from China for the establishment of a major aluminum smelter complex with an investment of $800 million in Ismailia's industrial zone.

When Fakhrani met the president of Chinese international cooperation group Yao Muvhali to discuss the offer, he stated that the project will produce aluminum ingots and a range of aluminum products for use by downstream industries.

Following the completion of feasibility studies, the industrial complex will be built in several stages. All production will be exported. The project will create nearly 3,000 jobs

Fakhrani presented the Chinese delegation with a complete file of available investment opportunities in Ismailia and pointed out that there are up to 173 projects on the waiting list, representing estimated investments of $1.42 billion.
