China Southern Grid Kicks Off Construction of First Pump-Storage Power Station in Hainan

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--CSG Peak and Frequency Regulation Power Generation Company Limited (Guangzhou, Guangdong) kicked off the construction of the main works for Qiongzhong Pump-Storage Power Station, the first pump-storage power station in the Hainan province, on March 25, 2014, according to an announcement from China Southern Power Grid Company (CSG) (Guangzhou, Guangdong) on March 31.

A key support project for the Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Project, Qiongzhong Pump-Storage Power Station is located upstream Litianhe River, a south bank tributary of Nandu River, in Qiongzhong County. It is about 106 kilometers from Haikou City and 110 kilometers from Sanya City. The project is wholly invested by CGS.

HydroChina Zhongnan Engineering Corporation (Changsha, Hunan) is responsible for the design and engineering of the project. Guangzhou Power Engineering Supervision Company Limited (Guangzhou, Guangdong) is responsible for the construction management.

The project received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission in March 2013. According to the approval, the project will be furnished with three vertical Francis pump reversible turbine generating units, each of 200 megawatts (MW). Total installed capacity will be 600 MW. Annual power output will be about 1 billion kilowatt-hours. Total investment in the project will be about $635 million.

The access road to the pump storage power station has been fully completed. The construction tunnel, plant access tunnel, discharge tunnel, sand and gravel production system, and the connecting highway between the upper reservoir and the lower reservoir are under construction.

According to plans, the total construction period of the project will be 45 months. It's expected that the first unit will begin operations at the end of 2017. Upon completion, the project will take peak and frequency regulation, emergency backup, and a blackout startup power source in the Hainan Grid.
