Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The Hainan Qiongzhong Pump-Storage Power Station, the first pump-storage power station in Hainan, received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on February 27, 2013, according to an announcement from China Southern Power Grid Corporation Limited (CSG) (Guangzhou, Guangdong), the project owner, on March 8.
As support for the Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Station, the Hainan Qiongzhong Pump-Storage Power Station is located at in the upstream of Litianhe River, a south bank subsidiary of Nandujiang River, in Qiongzhong County of the Hainan province. According to the approval, the power station has a total planned capacity of 600 megawatts (MW), with three hydraulic, turbine-pump reversible generating units, each of 200 MW. Total investment in the project will be about $635 million. The project mainly comprises the upper reservoir, the lower reservoir, the water passage system, the underground powerhouse and the surface switchyard. CSG Peak and Frequency Regulation Power Generation Company Limited (Guangzhou, Guangdong), a subsidiary of the CSG, is responsible for the development and future operations of the project.
In November 2010, the project received consent from the NDRC to kick off pre-stage preparation. In December 2011, the feasibility study report of the project passed the examination of an expert panel. Presently, preparation work, such as the access road, temporary work and permanent backup power supply, are all progressing smoothly. Land acquisition for the construction area has been fully performed.
According to the schedule, construction of the project will kick off officially in 2014. The first unit is expected to begin operations in March 2018, and all units will be put into operation in November 2018. Upon completion, the project will be used mainly for peak power, frequency regulation, and emergent backup and blackout startup in the China Southern Power Grid. Together with Changjiang Nuclear Power Station, the economic and safety performance of the grid will be greatly improved.
