China Southern Grid's 1,200-Megawatt Shenzhen Pumped-Storage Power Station Receives Approval

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--China Southern Grid Corporation's (Guangzhou, Guangdong) 1,200-megawatt (MW) Shenzhen pumped-storage power station received final approval from China's National Development and Reform Commission on November 4.

The Shenzhen pumped-storage power station is about 20 kilometers from the center of Shenzhen and 25 kilometers from Hong Kong. The project consists of an upper reservoir formed by a 55-meter-high main dam with 8.25 million cubic meters of water storage of 8.25 million cubic meters, the lower reservoir with a live storage capacity of 16.25 million cubic meters to be established based on existing Tongluojing reservoir, the water transmission and power generating system as well as other auxiliary works.

According to the approval, the power station will be furnished with four vertical, single-step, reversible 300-megawatt (MW) Francis turbine generating units. Total investment in the project will be about $934 million, and construction will last approximately 69 months. The first unit of the project is scheduled to begin operations in 2016.

To date, the owner has completed three tunnels and a road, as well as the permanent backup power source for the power station. The road connecting the upper and lower reservoirs is under construction. Tendering for the main work has been kicked off, and major construction is expected to begin by the end of the year.

Upon completion, the power station will be mainly responsible for the peak and frequency regulation, phase modulation and emergency backup for the Guangdong grid.

As reported, China Southern Grid currently has a total operational installed capacity of 6,720 MW for peak and frequency regulation, with another 2,480 MW under construction and 8,330 MW under pre-stage preparation or planning.
