Construction of Changjiang Nuclear Power Project Progresses Smoothly in Hainan

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Construction on Unit 2 of Hainan Nuclear Power Company Limited's (HNPC) (Haikou) Changjiang Nuclear Power Project kicked off on November 21, 2010, following the kickoff of construction on the first unit on April 25. China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) (Beijing) recently announced construction on both units is progressing smoothing, and total investment has reached more than $320 million.

Immediately following the nuclear crisis that resulted from the 9.0-magnitude earthquake in Japan on March 11, the Chinese government decided to perform a nationwide inspection on all nuclear power projects in China and to suspend approval of all nuclear power projects prior to the completion of a national nuclear safety plan, which would be based on a review on the new projects. HNPC actively performed the safety inspection under the united deployment of the CNNC. Although the design is fully satisfactory with the current laws and regulations in nuclear safety, CNNC is trying to further improve the design safety by adopting the highest standard in the strictest way.

Changjiang Nuclear Power Project is in Tangxing Village, in Changjiang Li autonomous region in the Hainan province. The project is jointly invested by CNNC (51%) and China Huaneng Group (Beijing) (49%), the largest power producer in China. The project has a total planned capacity of four large-scale nuclear power units; of which, two 650-megawatt (MW) pressurized water reactor-based CNP650 units from CNNC will be built in Phase I, with a total investment of more than $3 billion.

According to the schedule, units 1 and 2 will put into operation with an interval of 10 months in 2014 and 2015. Upon completion of Phase I, the project could generate about 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year, which could greatly reduce the construction of coal-fired units and hence reduce the emission of pollutants from coal-fired power plants in Hainan.
