Construction Starts on Wyoming Coal-Fired Power Project

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Black Hills Corporation (NYSE:BKH) (Rapid City, South Dakota) has commenced construction of the 90-megawatt Wygen II Power Project near Gillette, Wyoming. On August 17, 2005, the Wyoming Public Service Commission issued a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the baseload coal-fired power plant. Wygen II is expected to be a regulated asset of Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power, a subsidiary of Black Hills Corporation.

The new $169 million plant is the third 90-megawatt facility sited at the company’s Wyodak coal mine and energy complex and is expected to be completed in 2008. During the construction phase of the project over four hundred temporary jobs will be created with twenty permanent positions once the plant is complete. This is the first plant power dedicated to Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power. Black Hills has indicated that there could be additional power plants constructed at the Wyodak Energy Complex.

The engineering and construction firm selected for Wygen II is The Babcock & Wilcox Company (Barberton, Ohio), an operating unit of McDermott International (NYSE:MDR) (Houston, Texas). As part of the project, Babcock & Wilcox is designing a system utilizing activated carbon and calcium chloride catalyst to reduce mercury emissions by 60-percent. Wygen II is the first new coal-fired power plant in the United States required to install mercury reduction controls.
