Contractors Selected for 24-Megawatt Cogen to be Located at Carbon Black Plant in Texas

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Sid Richardson Carbon & Energy Company (Fort Worth, Texas) has selected Siemens Corporation (NYSE:SI) (New York, New York) to provide technology and major equipment for its planned 24-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired cogeneration unit addition planned for its Big Spring, Texas plant site.

Industrialinfo.com first reported this estimated $28 million investment in September 2004 and released this related news article - Gulf Coast Carbon Black Plant Owner Plans 24MW Cogen Addition.

Lauren Engineers and Constructors Incorporated (Abilene, Texas) is providing design and engineering services for this new unit, and a general contractor will be selected sometime in the spring of 2005 to begin onsite construction. Construction is scheduled to begin during a 10-day plant turnaround planned to kick off in September 2005 and equipment tie-ins will be completed during a February 2006 10-day turnaround. Sid Richardson expects to have the unit in commercial operation by April 2006.

Sid Richardson exercised an environmental strategy when making the decision to construct the new unit at its oldest carbon black plant in Big Spring, Texas. The new unit will generate an estimated 24MW per hour of electricity using the energy that is exuded from a by-product gas stream released through the production of carbon black as the cogen's energy source. It is estimated that half of the process steam and electricity will be used by the Big Spring, Texas plant, which consists of three carbon black production units producing over 800 million pounds per year, and the additional electricity will be sold under contract to the merchant market.
