Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The Kentucky Public Service Commission has given the go ahead for East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC) (Winchester, Kentucky) to move forward with the construction of a 278-megawatt (MW) coal-fired unit at the H.L. Spurlock Power Station near Maysville, Kentucky.
Construction is expected to begin in the next 30-60 days, with completion expected over a 36-month period. The cooperative has stated that it will need the new unit to meet the demand that will arise when it begins supplying power to Warren Rural Electric Cooperative (Bowling Green, Kentucky), when they cease buying power from Tennessee Valley Authority (NYSE:TVE )(Knoxville, Tennessee) in 2008.
EKPC completed a similar unit, E. A. Gilbert, earlier this year, which was the third unit at the plant.
