Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - Renewable energy company EDF Energy Renewables (London, England) has commissioned one of Scotland's largest onshore windfarms on the Lammermuir hills in the Scottish borders.

The Fallago Rig windfarm has a generating capacity of 144-megawatts (MW) from its 48 turbines, enough to power around 90,000 homes. The windfarm uses 3 MW V90 turbines manufactured by Danish wind energy company Vestas Wind Systems (OTC:VWDRY) (Randers, Denmark).

EDF Energy Renewables is a 50:50 joint venture created by French energy giant Electricite de France S.A. (EPA:EDF) (EDF) (Paris, France) and its renewable business, EDF Energies Nouvelles S.A. (EPA:EEN) (Paris), for exploiting growing wind energy opportunities in the U.K.. The windfarm was built for North British Windpower Limited (Edinburgh, Scotland).

Christian Egal, CEO of EDF Energy Renewables, claimed: "We are proud to deliver this landmark development, a clear demonstration of our ability to handle very large-scale projects. With more than 400 MW of onshore wind energy in operation and one offshore wind project in the final stage of construction, EDF Energy Renewables has become a major player in renewable energies."

The company has also recently commissioned the 12 MW Glasmoor II facility in eastern England and the 6 MW Boundary Lane project in northern England, bringing the capacity installed by EDF Energy Renewables since the beginning of 2013 to 162 MW.

EDF announced its entry into the increasingly busy U.K. offshore sector in January this year when EDF Energy Renewables installed the first turbine at its Teesside offshore windfarm, located 1.5 kilometres (km) off the north-east coast at Redcar. It will have a generation capacity of 62 MW when complete, enough to power up to 40,000 households. For additional information, see January 25, 2013, article - EDF Enters U.K. Offshore Wind Sector.
