EnergyWorks Progresses with Chicken Litter Waste-to-Energy Plant in Pennsylvania

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held bioenergy project developer EnergyWorks North America (Annapolis, Maryland) and subsidiary BioPower Incorporated (Annapolis) are progressing with construction on a new chicken litter waste-to-energy plant located 10 miles northeast of the historic Gettysburg National Military Park in Adams County, Pennsylvania.

Millions of chickens at Hillendale Farms' multiple poultry layer and pullet sites in the Gettysburg area generate more than 70,000 tons of chicken litter every year, and the phosphorus-rich manure is applied to farmland as fertilizer. The 3.5-megawatt gasification plant will reduce waste and generate enough power for 2,500 homes.

The dual-gasification system turns the manure into synthetic gas that will produce heat to drive an electric steam turbine to produce power. The estimated $30 million plant is expected to be in full operation by the end of 2012.

EnergyWorks selected Wohlsen Construction Company (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) to act as general contractor for the project.
