Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Beijing Guanting Windfarm, the first large-scale windfarm in Beijing is in its final installation stage. Erection of the first wind power generator was started on July 22, 2007. It is expected that the erection will be complete and the first unit will be ready to be put into operation by the end of this year. The project will supply 100 million kilowatts-hour of green power every year, which is capable of satisfying the power demand of 100,000 households.
Guanting Windfarm is located at the south bank of Guanting Reservoir, an important water supply source for Beijing, in the northwest end of Yanqing. Here is a traditional uptake of Beijing with an annual average wind speed of 7.11 meters per second at 70 meters above ground. Average wind power density is about 422 watts per square meter, and the annual utilization is about 2,000 hours, which is above the windfarm construction specification of an annual utilization above 1,800 hours, average wind power density above 150 watts per square meter. The planned installation capacity of Phase I is 50 megawatts (MW) with 33 units each of 1,500 kilowatts in single unit capacity. The power produced from the windfarm will be directly supplied to the power grid of Beijing to cover the power consumption in the stadiums and gymnasiums for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Guanting Windfarm is the first large-scale utilization of wind resources in Beijing, also one of the important projects promised for the Olympic Games.
Upon the completion of the windfarm, 33 sets of huge white wind power generators arranged in rows at the north side of the highway, together with 70-meter long impellers running under the blue sky, green mountain, white clouds and clear lake, will add a new tourism spot to the Beijing area.
