General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) is currently under way with construction on a $200 million stamping facility in Arlington, Texas.
Released Monday, April 09, 2012
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As part of a $2 billion investment for 17 facilities in eight states, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) (GM) (Detroit, Michigan) is currently under way with construction on a $200 million stamping facility in Arlington, Texas. The plant will be constructed adjacent to the existing 3.7 million-square-foot pickup & SUV assembly plant in Arlington, which produces approximately 190,000 units per year.
Site preparation began in February for construction of a 250,000- to 300,000-square-foot sheet metal stamping plant that will allow GM to produce large stamping components (exterior parts such as doors, hoods, fenders, trunk lids and other inner body pieces) to produce a new lineup of full-size sport utility vehicles. Completion is slated for mid-2013. Approximately 180 new jobs will be created once the expansion is completed.
Barton Marlow Company ( Southfield, Michigan) was selected to provide general construction services for the expansion.
The Arlington plant was selected by GM from a handful of facilities nationwide to manufacture the next-generation SUVs, as it is the only plant that produces GM's large SUVs and because the Arlington plant has a productive and cooperative working relationship with working management and the United Auto Workers union. The plant currently employs approximately 2,700 workers.
GM currently operates nine stamping plants producing parts for the 11 assembly plants it operates. The company currently spends $40 million per year to transport parts from these plants to Arlington.
GM is also under way with a $331 million expansion of the Arlington plant's body shop. The expansion includes the construction of a 129,250-square-foot addition on the west side of the plant and will include 51 bays and six new truck docks. The expansion will enable the Arlington plant to produce the next generation of full-size Chevrolet Tahoes, Suburabans, GMC Yukons and Cadillac Escalades. Commercial Contracting Corporation (Auburn Hills, Michigan) was selected to provide general construction services, and Conti Mechanical/Electric (Sterling Heights, Michigan) was selected to provide subcontracting services for the expansion.
