Layoffs will begin this month for the closing of the 2 million-square-foot plant, which boasted more than 1,000 employees. Production will stop by June 2011, and the plant will officially close by December 2011. Approximately 600 employees will lose their jobs.
Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, GM was founded in 1908. The company currently employs more than 209,000 employees worldwide in 157 countries. GM produces cars and trucks in 31 countries and sells and services vehicles in various divisions, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Opel, Vauxhall and Holden.
