Researched by Industriaslinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Georgia-Pacific Corporation (NYSE:GP) (Atlanta, Georgia) has received an air permit that will allow the company to proceed with a $150 million cogeneration expansion project on the site of a pulp and paper mill in Port Hudson, Louisiana. GP plans to start up a new fluidized bed boiler and steam turbine generator by the end of 2006. The new boiler will reduce the mills consumption of natural gas, estimated to be upwards of 20MMscfd, by burning petroleum coke, wood waste, and sludge. The steam turbine, a 58MW unit, will push the mills generating capacity to around 110MW and enable the company to sell excess electricity to the grid.
Industrialinfo.com first reported on the companys plan to expand the Port Hudson power plant in a project report released April 2004 and related news article dated --July 6, 2004-- Georgia-Pacific Sees Petroleum Coke as Potential Fuel of the Future. Jacobs Engineering Group (Greenville, South Carolina) is the engineering firm of record.
Operations at the Port Hudson mill began in 1968. Today, more than 1,000 workers run the mills kraft pulping operations, two tissue machines and freesheet paper machine and power plant.
