Guizhou Plans to Build the Largest Energy Base in South China

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- The western region of Guizhou Province is rich in coal, hydropower and mining resources with outstanding advantages in the combination of resources. However, the overall resource development level is very low at present. The Government of Guizhou Province has planned to build the West Guizhou Economic Zone as the largest energy base in South China through an overall arrangement over the next few years.

The West Guizhou Economic Zone belongs to the water resource enriched West Panzhihua-Liupanshui region. Total verified reserves of coal resource in the zone reached 44.2 billion metric tons, accounting for 79.8% of the total verified coal reserves in Guizhou Province, which is the largest coal base in South China. Total verified reserves of coal bed methane reached 2.1 trillion cubic meters, accounting for 66% of the total reserves in Guizhou Province. Total exploitable hydropower resources reached 6,692 megawatts (MW), accounting for 39.8% of the total exploitable reserves in Guizhou province.

The advantage of complimentary resources inside and outside the region is quite outstanding. The energy advantage in the economic zone can be well combined with the advantage of aluminum mining resources in the adjacent Northwest Guangxi region to establish the trans-regional cooperation in the power – aluminum processing industry; together with the advantages of vanadium and iron ore resources in West Panzhihua region, trans-regional cooperation on power- coke -iron and steel metallurgy industries can be well established.

In the next three years, a total of 10,000 MW of installed hydropower and thermal power capacity will be added in the West Guizhou Economic Zone, and the total installed capacity will be expanded to 20,000 MW in 2010. Thirty coal mines with capacity of over one million metric tons will be built, which will bring the total annual coal production output to 120 million metric tons in the region.
