Gulf JP Pushes for Larger Gas Projects in Thailand

Researched by Industrial Info Resources East Asia (Kofu-shi, Japan)--Southeast Asia is growing, and as the market region's gross domestic product expands, so too will its electricity demand. The market region's power industry is dominated primarily by coal, though it is investing in natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. By the end of the decade, Southeast Asia will require at least 150 gigawatts (GW) more electricity that its current capacity possesses.

As of now, Industrial Info is tracking more than 80 natural gas and LNG projects in Southeast Asia, the majority of which are under development in the Philippines. The runner-up however, is Thailand, with nearly 6 GW worth of gas-fired projects on the books. Roughly 40% of that development is currently under construction.

The largest of these projects is headed by Gulf JP Company Limited (Bangkok), a subsidiary of Electric Power Development Company Limited (TYO:9513) (J-Power) (Tokyo). In Thailand, Gulf JP serves as an independent power provider much like its parent J-Power does in Japan. Most of its projects in Thailand have been small-scale cogeneration projects usually 100 megawatts (MW) or less. Gulf JP has recently begun developing larger scale projects, like the Nong Saeng power station, a 1,600-MW combined-cycle power station now under construction in Saraburi.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (TYO:7011) (MHI ) (Tokyo) was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract earlier in the year, however Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited (Bangkok) is heading civil construction as well as plant construction. MHI is handling procurement and engineering, and will head the installation of units at the power station.

Completion of the Nong Saeng power station is expected later in 2014 and Gulf JP has already secured a 25-year power contract with Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) (Bangkok). Gulf JP is also planning another 1,600-MW combined-cycle project in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, however that project was announced as delayed as of June of this year due to a location change.
