Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Tennessee Valley Authority's (NYSE:TVC) (Knoxville, Tennessee) Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Station has de-rated the facility's three units because the Tennessee River, used as a coolant for the power plant, is too hot.
When the river's temperature is too hot to act as a coolant, engineers must reduce the unit's performance to half-load.
The plant is located in Decatur, Alabama. Browns Ferry has three General Electric steam turbines, with a boiler water reactor attached to each of them. Unit 1 became operational in 1974. Unit 2 followed in 1975, and Unit 3 in 1977. The plant has a total output capacity of 3,297 megawatts. Currently, Browns Ferry can produce enough electricity to power moer than 500,000 homes in Alabama.
