Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The fastest growing sector in agriculture is energy and the production of biofuels. Capacity for ethanol and biodiesel production has consistently and sharply increased over the past several years to meet growing demand. Following President Bushs State of the Union address earlier this week, everyone is again looking at the biofuel industry and how it can help reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Nationally, in excess of 155 biofuel plants have the capability of producing more than 5.4 billion gallons of fuel ethanol and more than 300 million gallons of biodiesel. Only seven plants are currently operating within the Gulf Coast region producing some 80 million gallons of biofuels annually.
The landscape will soon be changing over the next two years and biofuel production will grow to over 2 billion gallons annually in Texas and additional Gulf Coast States will add another 1.2 billion gallons of capacity.
