Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On August 31, 2007, Li Xiaopeng, president of China Huaneng Group Corporation (Huaneng Group) (Beijing, China), met with Beijing Mayor Wang Qishan to sign the Framework Agreement on Promoting Research on CO2 Capture and Disposal Technology and on Further Enhanced Cooperation in Energy Sector.
The main content of the agreement is that Huaneng Group will actively study CO2 capture in Beijing, establish Beijing Green Gases Capture and Disposal Laboratory, and complete the construction of the CO2 capture demonstration project before the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The government of Beijing City supports the construction of Huaneng Groups laboratory and demonstration project in Beijing with great effort, and encourages related enterprises in Beijing to strengthen cooperation with Huaneng Group on promoting the application of CO2 products captured from the project.
The agreement marks that the first coal-fired power plant CO2 capture demonstration project in China has officially launched.
Huaneng Group is the largest power producer in China. As of the end of May 2007, Huaneng Group owns 87 power plants in 23 provinces (cities or autonomous regions) with a total installed capacity of 60.64 million kilowatts. The current installed capacity of the Huaneng Group in Beijing is 845 megawatts, accounting for about 26% of the total power output and covering one-third of the concentrated heat supply area in Beijing.
Huaneng Group launched its green coal power plan in 2004. The company has been actively engaged in the research and development of CO2 capturing and disposal technology based on the new generation of power generation technology with close to zero pollutant emission. With great support from the government of Beijing and related state departments, Huaneng Group plans to build the first demonstration project at the Huaneng Beijing Thermal Power Plant, which is capable of capturing 3,000 metric tons of CO2 annually. Before the cooperation in Beijing, Huaneng Group had signed cooperative agreements with Tianjin and Shanghai to boost the research and development of green coal power, including zero emissions of CO2, as well as the construction of demonstration projects.
