India's Installed Power Generation Capacity Breaks 200,000-Megawatt Mark

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India's Power Ministry has announced that, with the commissioning of a 660-megawatt (MW) unit of a power plant in Jhajjar, Haryana, the country's installed power generation capacity has crossed the 200,000 megawatt (MW) benchmark and currently stands at 200,287 MW. The announcement is particularly significant, considering the coal supply shortages and regulatory problems that new power projects have been experiencing.

The total capacity breaks down into 132,013 MW from coal fired sources; 38,991 MW from hydropower; 4,780 MW from nuclear; and 24,503 from renewable power sources.

The power capacity addition during the 2011-12 fiscal year stands at 20,501 MW, of which 5,482 MW was added in March alone.

During the 11th Five-Year Plan (2007-12), there was a capacity addition of 53,122 MW, which represented a 150% increase over the power capacity addition during the 10th Five-Year Plan (2002-07), and was close to the total cumulative achievement of 56,517 MW of the last 15 years, said a senior Power Ministry official.

Concurrent with the generation capacity announcement, the state-owned Power Construction Corporation of China said that it had signed a $2.4 billion contract to build the second phase of a coal-fired power station in southern India to meet soaring local demand .

The second phase of the project for Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS) (Mumbai) includes the addition of four generators, each with 660-MW capacity. Under the engineering, procurement and construction contract, the company will install Chinese-manufactured power equipment. The project is expected to create more thjan 10,000 jobs in India.
