Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info will hold its annual Market Outlook & Networking Event in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on November 5, where we will discuss both the drivers and obstacles of project spending in the U.S. and Canada, with a special emphasis on what's happening in the U.S. Gulf Coast Region.
If you follow any sort of news about industrial spending and project activity, you undoubtedly realize that one of the strongest concentrations of industrial activity is along the U.S. Gulf Coast, particularly in Texas and Louisiana. However, while the area remains a hot spot of spending, a few key issues have begun changing the course and timing of some of these plans: low crude oil prices, a tightening regional labor supply, and an oversupply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on the global market.
LNG prices are linked to crude pricing trends, and as crude prices continue to tumble, more scrutiny is being applied to the 335 million tons per year of LNG projects being tracked by Industrial Info that are planned to kick off between 2015 and 2020. Although there have been some announcements of spending pullbacks from some pipeline companies, and riskier investments surrounding methane and methanol production, these have been much less than the cuts by exploration and production companies.
According to Industrial Info's Industrial Project Database, the Chemical Processing sector, Bulk Storage Terminal industry and Pipeline sector are on track to remain some of the Industrial Market's "bright spots" in regard to near-term project activity.
Despite the downturn in crude oil prices, many companies continue to charge forward with expectations to build out one of the largest regional expansion plans in decades. Undertaking this scale of work will require owners and contractors to pull labor resources from all regions of the United States. Construction costs are expected to rise as owners are faced with wage rate inflation, incentives to maintain workers and the payout of per diems to attract quality workers from outside the region.
