Market Commentary:
The word on everybody's lip these days seems to be "Storagemageddon," even with global GDP's being hit harder than Mohammed Ali stung Frasier while COVID-19 is still wreaking havoc as countries strive to open back up. But with that happening, all we hear is there is no room in the proverbial Storage Inn for crude and products; obviously because a wrecking ball has been taken to demand. And it has come down faster than a dynamite crew bringing down a skyscraper. Leading to yet another earth-shattering ka-boom in the WTI markets. Call in the regulator hounds.
However, word on the dusty street -- reported in enelyst this morning in a conversation with Ursa -- is "Whoa, hold your horses Calamity Jane." It is not that bad. In fact, there is some room at the Inn which might not be leased. And that everybody needs to take a deep collective breath.
As we can see, the Chinese Dragon is awakening, and this is impacting Asian storage. And we know that the U.S. and Europe are waking back up as well, with drivers returning to work who might actually be our demand saviors. Even if their countries fiscally are being stricken and there might be a recession looming on the horizon. That is for another day.
Fortunately, within this Global Refining Report, IIR hopes to shed some light on what is transpiring from a Refinery Operations perspective as the Global Refining Index (working with ADUs) illustrates what is happening to crude throughputs and how refineries are de-rating and operating overall in these times. The Global Refinery Maps depict the COVID-19 Impact as well as the non-COVID-19 outages. Also, you will find both a Capacity Offline table to quickly display weekly what the available operating capacity by region is, not to mention Area Charts, which visualize COVID-19 Impact and non-COVID-19 capacity offline in Asia, Europe and North America.
