As the electric vehicle market gets ready to take off in the U.S., Fisker Automotive Incorporated (Irvine, California) has acquired a former 3.2-million-square-foot General Motors (GM) (Detroit, Michigan) manufacturing plant in Wilmington, Delaware. The facility will be refurbished and retooled to manufacture the plug-in hybrid vehicles, including the company's Project Nina model, a family sedan. Most of the vehicles manufactured at the facility will be exported. The company plans to have production at the facility under way by the end of 2012 and hopes to be manufacturing between 75,000 and 100,000 vehicles per year by 2014. The estimated cost of refurbishing the former GM plant is $175 million.

With 12 Pharma-Biotech projects valued at $455 million planned to begin during the quarter, New York leads the Northeast region for Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry project activity. Included in these projects is Cornell University's (Ithica, New York) building replacement at the Stocking Hall science laboratory. A portion of the existing facility will be demolished, and a four-story, 100,000-square-foot addition will be constructed, while the remaining 45,000 square feet will be renovated. The updated facility will provide research and academic space for Cornell's Department of Food Science. The project is anticipated to take four years to complete and has an estimated TIV of $105 million. Mitchell/Giurgola Architects LLP (New York, New York) is acting as architect, while Gilbane Building Company (Albany, New York) is acting as construction manager.
