Interstate Brands Setting Up New Bakery in Rocky Mountain Region

Interstate Brands Corporation (NYSE: IBC) (Kansas City, Missouri) is proceeding with renovation and construction activities at the site of a new bakery operation in the Rocky Mountain region of the U.S. The company purchased a former Levi Strauss distribution warehouse in Henderson, Nevada back in January of this year for $6.3 million and plans to invest about $20 million in renovations and equipment to set up a baking operation at the site.

Florida Crown Architects (Orlando, Florida) has been selected as the A&E firm for the project and SR Construction (Las Vegas, Nevada) will handle general contractor duties on one of the largest baking operations in the Western United States.

Plans call for the installation of one hi-speed bread line, one hi-speed bun line, and a dry products line to serve the West Coast and Nevada regions. The existing building has about 250,000 square feet of floor space to work with and a 70,000 square foot mezzanine.

Renovations at the site have been underway since earlier this summer and the company hopes to have the bakery fully operational by early 2004. Once completed, Interstate plans to close a bakery in Montebello, California and move its operations to the new Henderson bakery. About 200 area jobs will be created as well.

Interstates Brands Corporation is the largest national wholesale baker and distributor of fresh bread and snack cakes in the U.S. They operate 63 baking operations throughout the United States under brand names like Wonder Bread, Hostess, Dolly Madison, Drakes, Sunbeam, and J.J. Nissen.
