Kansas City Power & Light Plans Environmental Upgrade at Kansas Coal-Fired Power Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Kansas City Power & Light (Kansas City, Missouri), a subsidiary of Great Plains Energy Incorporated (NYSE:GXP ) (Kansas City, Missouri), is planning to invest close to $500 million on environmental upgrades at its La Cygne Power Station (La Cygne, Kansas).

The 1,578-megawatt La Cygne facility consists of two coal-fired units that became operational between 1973 and 1977. The 893-megawatt Unit #1 with Babcock & Wilcox wet bottom supercritical boiler was installed with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Unit earlier this spring to reduce nitrogen dioxide (NOx) emissions.

Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Missouri) provided engineering services, while the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Babcock & Wilcox Company (Barberton, Ohio) performed construction and installation.

Construction is also scheduled to kick-off this fall on an SCR system addition to be complete and tie-ins to a 685-megawatt Unit #2 in the last quarter of 2009. It has not been announced if Babcock & Wilcox will be contracted to do this unit.

Baghouses (fabric filters) are designed to reduce particulate matters, and are scheduled to be constructed and tie-in on the two units by 2011.

Unit #1 is already equipped with a wet Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) scrubber, it’s being proposed for an upgrade to further reduced sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions.

Unit #2 will be installed with a brand new scrubber. Construction is to start at the end of this year with completion in 2011 for Unit #1 and 2012 for Unit #2.
