Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Coffeyville, Kansas, just got smarter with the recent completion of the 56-megawatt (MW) Coffeyville 2 Smart Power Generation Plant. The facility began commercial operations January 1, following its completion by Coffeyville Municipal Power & Light System (Coffeyville) and Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri).
The Coffeyville Energy Center facility uses three Wartsilla natural gas-fired reciprocating engines and will provide power for 39 cities and towns throughout the state. The new facility will provide a reliable source of energy, helping support wind energy in the state. The new facility will also be ranked as one of the most efficient, clean-burning, natural gas-fired, simple-cycle power plants in Kansas due to its quick-start capabilities.
The new facility began construction in September 2015 and took approximately 15 months to be completed. The site was chosen due to the location of an existing natural gas pipeline and to replace nearby aging power plants.
The project had a total investment value of $60 million and engaged Burns & McDonnell as the general contractor. Coffeyville Municipal Power & Light System will own and operate the facility.
