Kentucky Coal-Fired Station Shuts Down

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) lost the 2,578-megawatt (MW) Paradise coal-fired power station Monday night. The large units are a major energy loss for the SERC area during times of extreme heat and grim summer storms. Units 01 and 03 (704 MW and 1,170 MW respectively) both suffered large water leaks and were forced into unplanned outages. Unit 02 (704 MW) came offline for a broken shaft on the generator. Power for the plant has been re-routed from a nearby substation, but this won’t be for long. Plant problems are said to be temporary and once equipment is patched and repaired, a quick turnaround should occur. The repairs on each unit have been estimated to last about a week, sooner if parts are quickly obtained.

Paradise generates 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, enough to supply more than 930,000 homes. By 2010, TVA will spent about $6 billion on emissions controls at its fossil-fuel plants to ensure that this power supply is generated as cleanly as possible, consistent with efficiency.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power company, with 33,000 megawatts of dependable generating capacity. Through 158 locally owned distributors, TVA provides power to about 8.7 million residents of the Tennessee Valley.
