Largest Cheese Plant in Alberta Planning $15 Million Expansion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The largest cheese-production plant in Alberta is planning to double its production to ensure the development of specialty and natural cheese production capacity. Sunnyrose Cheese Limited, an affiliate of Agropur Cooperative (Longueuil, Quebec) is developing a project to increase milk-processing capacity at the Diamond City plant from 50 million liters a year to about 100 million liters a year. However, the expansion plans hinge on finalizing a 25-year agreement with the city of Lethbridge to treat the plant's wastewater. Presently, Sunnyrose trucks wastewater to a municipal treatment facility about 12 kilometers from the Diamond City cheese plant.

The expansion plans call for a 40,000-square-foot building addition, a new packaging line to handle 640 pound boxes, a clean-in-place system, a cooler and freezer and a wastewater pipeline.

Construction is targeted to begin this fall with completion expected by late 2009.
