Largest Thermal Power Plant in South Xinjiang Ready to Begin Full Operation

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The grid-connection ceremony for Unit 1 of the Xukuang Group Xinjiang Akesu Thermal Power Company Limited's (Akesu, Xinjiang) Akesu thermal power plant was held in Akesu on September 30, 2011. Presently, erection of Unit 2 is almost complete, and the unit is expected to begin operation by the end of this year. This marks that Phase I project of the largest thermal power plant in South Xinjiang is ready to begin full operation soon.

The Xukuang Akesu thermal power plant, located in the west industrial park of Akesu City, is invested by Xuzhou Mining Group Company Limited (Xuzhou, Jiangsu). The power plant has a total planned capacity of 1,720 megawatts (MW), of which two 200-MW units will be built in Phase I with a total investment of about $280 million. Construction of the Phase I project was officially kicked off on September 24, 2009. As an important power source construction project in the 11th Five-Year Plan (2005-10) of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region and a key project in the overall heat-supply planning for Akesu City, the project will be able to supply about 2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to the local grid and to supply heat for a total area of about 4.4 million square meters in Akesu City. Upon completion, the project will also replace 106 small boilers scattered throughout the service area.

Following the commissioning of the project, the power shortage in Akesu as well as the South Xinjiang grid during the maintenance period of the existing Kuche Thermal Power Plant will be greatly alleviated.

In the next stage, Xukuang Group will continue to invest about $750 million to implement the 1,320-MW Phase II project, according to the construction agreement for the coal and electricity complex signed between Xukuang Group and the government of Akesu.
