Location, Location, Location…University of Alaska Joins National Trend with Construction of $87 Million Integrated Science Center

While Alaska is geographically miles away from sister states, it is closely mirroring them in terms of university capital investment. Images of dog sleds and pipelines notwithstanding, the University of Alaska (Anchorage, Alaska) is currently building an $87 million Integrated Science Center. As discussed in the newly released 2007 Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry Forecast, the school believes that by increasing its laboratory infrastructure it will not only be of benefit to its student body, but serve as a driver for growth (For details see related May 6, 2006 news article - Head of the Class: North American Universities Invest $14.7 Billion for Life Science Facility Construction). The project is the first capital investment in the sciences at the school in almost 30 years.

The 120,000 square-foot building, designed in a joint venture by Anchorage’s ECI/Hyer and ZGF (Seattle, Washington), will feature multiple classrooms and administrative areas in addition to its 24 interdisciplinary laboratories. The school awarded Cornerstone Construction Company (Anchorage, Alaska) to serve as the project’s Construction Manager at Risk.

Under development since 2001, once full funding was received there was a rush to begin site work in September 2006 in order to allow work on the project throughout the winter. Completion is expected in the fall of 2009.
