Memphis Biofuels Opens New Biodiesel Plant in Tennessee

Startup biofuels venture, Memphis Biofuels, LLC (Memphis, Tennessee) has commissioned its new biodiesel production facility located in Memphis, Tennessee. The company acquired a 1914 era Proctor & Gamble plant that was used to purify vegetable oil byproducts and managed to convert the existing equipment and infrastructure into a new plant with an old look.

The facility will have an initial production capacity of 36 million gallons per year of biodiesel and plans are to ramp up production to 100 million gallons annually as new markets in the region open up. The company also has recently secured a deal with a major fuel retailer in Tennessee to supply more than 35 million gallons of the renewable fuel.

The plant will utilize state-of-the-art continuous transesterification technology to produce high-quality biodiesel utilizing vegetable oil and animal fats feedstocks to produce fuel for the mid-south and national markets. The fuel will also carry BQ-9000 fuel accreditation operating within the guidelines set forth by the National Biodiesel Board.

Construction and renovations on the facility began back in July of this year and getting the plant up and running took only six months to complete, a head spinning schedule that most developing biofuels plant owner’s would love to have considering the high cost and availability of construction materials and long-lead equipment deliveries a lot of biorefineries in the pre-construction phase are now facing.

Other biodiesel plants developing in Tennessee include Mean Green BioFuels’ (Alpharetta, Georgia) 20 million-gallon per year plant that will also be located in Memphis and PetroGreen’s (Athens, Tennessee) 5 million-gallon per year plant that is considering sites in Tennessee as a location for its plant as well as Georgia and Alabama.
