Nanticoke Power Station located in Nanticoke, Ontario and owned by Ontario Power Generation, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Energy, shut down the 500-megawatt (MW) coal-fired Unit 7 on Monday July 9, 2007, due to an unplanned boiler outage.
While the unit was shut down, workers discovered a generator seal malfunction. The plant has stated that the seals purpose is to hold hydrogen and at this time there have been no leaks detected, only that it had started to run hot. Plant officials have stated that if there are no leaks discovered they are hoping to return the unit online by Sunday July 15, 2007. Nanticokes 500 MW Unit 5 was also taken offline July 12, 2007 to repair a boiler leak and is expected to return online Saturday July 14, 2007 after repairs are complete.
