New York's Huntley Plant Extends Unit 68 Outage Due to Casing Crack

Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Huntley Power Station, located in Tonawanda, New York, continues to make repairs to its 217-megawatt (MW), coal-fired Unit 68. The outage has been extended two weeks because of the extensive repairs that are needed. The station is owned and operated by NRG Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton , New Jersey).

Officials said that the unit was shut down for a planned maintenance outage in October. During the inspection, a crack was discovered in the casing of the turbine. The repair has begun, and the investigation continues. However, plant officials said that once the repairs have been completed, the unit might be placed on reserve until it is dispatched. The projected completion of the outage is November 29; at that time, the unit will be available to return online if needed.

The Huntley plant has two generating units and a total generating capacity of 488 MW when at full load. Unit 67, which continues to operate at full capacity, is scheduled to come offline for a planned 14-day preventative maintenance inspection on November 17.
