Niagara Falls Limited Water Supply Makes Ontario Power Generation Modernization More Practical

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) (Toronto, Ontario) has started the final phase to increase generating capacity for the Niagara Falls Hydroelectric Generation Complex in Queenston, Ontario. OPG, formerly known as Ontario Hydro, started looking at increasing power generation over twenty years ago. The $2 billion original plan was to add an underground powerhouse, Sir Adam Beck III hydroelectric station, for an additional generation increase of 750-megawatt (MW) to 1,125 MW.

Ontario Hydro/OPG with consultants determined that the water flow needed by Sir Adam Beck III would over extend the water flow and impair the view for the tourist industry, in that it would be like a rock wall instead of water falls. The sixteen units at Sir Adam Beck II have been modernized over the last nine years and have increased their capacity, at a cost of about $185 million. To get the full effect the company will invest another $842 million for the boring of a tunnel over the next four years, increasing water flow by 28% and increasing electrical capacity from about 2,000 MW to about 2,200 MW to about 15% in 2009.
